The reason for the earthquake in Japan is that the tectonic plates under the ocean shifted, causing the earth to shake; which is a process that has happened since the beginning of time. The plates can either be pushed together or pulled apart to create an earthquake. In the case of Japan, the Pacific plate, which lies underneath the Pacific Ocean, was being pulled under the Eurasian Plate, on which Europe and Asia lie. Where the two plates meet is part of the Ring of Fire, which is result of the plates mashing together for thousands of years, meaning that Japan and other eastern Asian countries will experience many more earthquakes over time.

On March 11, 2011, a powerful and lengthy earthquake shook Tohoku, the northern section of Honshu island in Japan. As is common in Japan and other countries along the subducting border of the Pacific Plate, the plates had been rubbing against each other for years and finally slipped forward. The earthquake raised a huge section of the sea floor (and in fact also lowered the coast of Japan), and the crest of water moved west and southwest onto the coast of northeast Honshu.

Because of the low plains in that area, the tsunami, measured at up to 7 meters (24 feet) high, was able to sweep several kilometers inland, wreaking massive destruction and killing nearly 16,000 residents.
