A myocardial infarction, commonly referred to as a heart attack, occurs when the blood supply to the heart is cut off. This is usually the result of plaques in the arteries, that form blood clots if they rupture.

A heart attack is when something (usually cholesterol) builds up in the heart, or areas around it, and eventually blocks or slows down the blood flow to the heart. It results in heart cells dieing and can be very dangerous, especially if it lasts long enough to damage your heart enough beyond repair.

"Heart attack" is the vernacular for what is medically termed "myocardial infarction", which means that some portion of cardiac muscle has "died" or become necrotic (nonfunctional). This weakens the heart's ability to pump blood, either mildly (in the case of a mild inferior wall infarction) up to severely, in the case of a major anterolateral wall infarction.
