Arthritis, or inflammation of the joints, inflames the joints in two distinct ways.

In osteoarthritis, the cartilage of the mobile joints between any two bones erodes in part or in full, and the bones in the afflicted joints slide and abrade against each other as a person moves, making it extremely painful to move and inhibiting the mobility of any person afflicted with it.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease disease in which joints in the body become inflamed, resulting in pain, swelling and stiffness. It is caused by a malfunction the body's immune system, which normally fights infection, start attacking healthy joints. Often rheumatoid arthritis is extremely painful and debilitating. It is not known why rheumatoid arthritis develops, and there is no cure. However, understanding of the disease has improved, and there are now effective treatments that can help ease the pain and symptoms, and slow down the disease. It is very important that treatment is started early to minimize damage to joints.
