Impressionism started with the concept that atmosphere could be expressed the best by using unbroken colors (not mixed with black or white) and to place the color dots side by side, because the eye connects them altogether and give one totally impression.
The other idea of Impressionism was to catch the moment itself, when the painter is standing in the landscape and the weather is changing every moment.
