I have on myself, and heard from a guy that also had one that in Mexico it means that you have killed someone :) not sure if this is true. But it is definitely not a "female" version of a scull tattoo, there is a specific butterfly that has a scull pattern on it's wings, not sure what it's called. It is a common motive in tattoos. I'm female but I've met/seen more guys than girls with such a tattoo, and they were not gay.
Typically, a butterfly is used to show growth and development. Butterflies start as small caterpillars, so to have a butterfly tattoo is to state that the wearer has grown and developed. Many have these tattoos when they are in a new chapter of their lives.
Butterflies are graceful and are often seen with plants and flowers from which they get their nourishment. A butterfly with a flower would represent beauty, grace and strength.
Hope that helps :)
