CF stands for Compact Flash. Compact Flash cards are approximately 1.25x2.5" in size, and are used as a kind of digital film. The images from the digital camera are recorded on the CF card, which can then be placed inside a CF card reader, connected to a computer, to view and download the images.
Most, if not all, professional-grade DSLR camera bodies use CF cards, as they have high capacities (currently upwards of 32GB) and are extremely durable.
Many consumer-grade cameras use SD, XD or Memory Stick cards, rather than CF cards.

The images are there while the CF is in the camera too. The camera is just unable to read them. How did they get put there? A photo stored on the CF directly from the computer will not show up unless the camera thinks it did them.
