Forster Batterham was an anarchist is the most radical sense of the word. When Tamar was born, and Dorothy subsequently converted to Catholicism, Forster was not happy, to say the least. In his mind, all conventional institutions, especially the Catholic Church, were an imposition on man's freedom. Forster's alleged comment (the actual story, as Dorothy told it, is a bit different) basically implied that the rubrics of the Church made life dull, as they reject the "do whatever feels good" mentality.
