It really does depend on what type of artist you intend to be. I know a lot of artists that don't have anything but a high school diploma (and even a few that never went to high school). Now if are considering selling your work to make a living I'd recommend some type of business related degree that would help. Even a marketing degree would help you understand how to better run your art business (again if you are going to be selling your work to the masses). Other than that perhaps you would like to work for an art gallery which might require you to have extensive knowledge of history which getting an art history degree would be beneficial.
