What types of classifications are used for plutons?
Plutons can be classified according to size and shape. A dyke is
a sheet pluton that cuts across existing rock formations, a sill
has a tabular form that intrudes between two existing rock
formations, a batholith is a large irregular shaped
emplacement.
Plutons can also be classified based on the type of rock
composition. Many plutons are formed from either granite,
granodiorite, quartz diorite, or monzonite.
