Answer He led the Red ScareJoseph Raymond McCarthy (November 14, 1908 May 2, 1957) was an American politician originally aligned with the United States Democratic Party and later with the United States Republican Party. McCarthy served as a U.S. Senator from the state of Wisconsin from 1947 to 1957. During his ten years in the Senate, McCarthy and his staff became notorious for aggressive investigations of people in the U.S. government and others suspected, on grounds of their political beliefs as Communists or Communist sympathizers, of being Soviet agents.

As a result of these controversial actions the term McCarthyism was coined to specifically describe the intense anti-Communist movement that existed in America from 1950 to about 1956, a time which became popularly known as the Red Scare. During this period, people who were suspected of varying degrees of Communist loyalties became the subject of aggressive inquiries, which became known as "witch hunts" to his opponents. People from the media, the motion picture industry, government, and the military were accused by McCarthy of being suspected Soviet spies or Communist sympathizers. Although McCarthy's activities did not directly result in any convictions or criminal prosecutions for espionage, the now declassified Venona Cables from the former Soviet Union indicate that some of the individuals he pursued were actually guilty. The term "McCarthyism" has since become synonymous with any government activity which seeks to suppress unfavorable political or social views, often by limiting or suspending civil rights under the pretext of maintaining national security.

In 1950 anti-communist hysteria began to emerge in the USA as encouraged by the actions of Senator Joe McCarthy who began accusing high-ranking US officials of being communists or at least selling them secrets. Many government employees were found guilty about passing on secrets about the Atom Bomb but he eventually lost popularity and then soon power as his accusations grew wilder and cruder each day. All this simply served to increase tension between the two superpowers due to the hysteria created and the detest shown by this senator towards the communists.

Joseph McCarthy was a US Senator from Wisconsin during the 1950s and a World War 2 veteran. He made a name for himself by claiming to find Communists throughout the US government and in other important segments of US society. In doing so he fed an unreasoning fear and hysteria that resulted in unjustified persecution of many people.

In the 1950's Senator Joesph McCarthy initiated a program in Congress to hunt down and prosecute communists in the United States, who were believed to be effectively acting as agents of the Soviet Union, and to be traitors to their own country; this program became known as a witch-hunt, since it was conducted with a similar paranoia and disregard for evidence as a medieval accusation of witchcraft. The chief agency for this witch-hunt was the notorious House Unamerican Activities Committee (HUAC). The judgment of history is cloudy given that so many people were accused with out public review of any evidence. However translated files from the former KGB in the 1990's after the fall of the Soviet Union have corroborated the guilt of some of the more well known cases, Alger Hiss, The Rosenberg's, etc. . McCarthy's grandstanding diminished what benefit a careful scrutiny of available evidence may have accomplished to protect America's interests in a tumultuous time. Given that many innocent peoples lives were harmed, and the pursuit of real threats to America was sidetracked by unsubstantiated fear mongering, this remains one of the ugliest episodes of American history.
