Mitral Valve
Mitral stenosis is the medical term meaning narrowing of the mitral valve.
There are two Atrioventricular Valves in the heart. The first one, on the right side of the heart, is called the Tricuspid Valve (it has three 'flaps'). On the left side, the Atrioventricular Valve is called the Bicuspid or Mitral Valve (it has two 'flaps')
The mitral valve (also known as the bicuspid) controls the flow of blood between the left atrium and the left ventricle. The similar valve on the right side of the heart is the tricuspid.
The bicuspid valve is also known as the mitral valve or the left atrioventricular valve.
Mitral stenosis
The left atrioventricular valve is also known as the mitral valve.

Mitral valve prolapse is that mitral valve can not close completely due to some change in its structure. It's thought to be inherited and commonly occur with other connective tissue disorder, mostly Marfan syndrome.
The medical term for backflow of blood through the mitral valve is mitral regurgitation.
Heart attacks that damage the structures that support the mitral valve are a common cause of mitral valve insufficiency. Myxomatous degeneration can cause a "floppy" mitral valve that leaks.
