There were several processes all of which antedated Eastman Kodak which went commercial with paper-bac ked roll film in the late l880"s. Daguerrotype used metallic plates- (hence photographic plate) and some could be developed fairly rapidly- say five minutes after the shot using trick backs and in-camera development. exactly how this worked was a tightly-held trade secret- in this sense it was a forerunner of polaroid. I can remember an itinerant Daguerrotype artist making the rounds in Bronx Park as late as the very early sixties- and he had a stuffed horse as a prop for juvenile work. It was interesting to watch the process. immediately after the shot the operator took out the plate ( about , maybe exactly 4X5 horizontal) and dropped it into a chamber in the back of the camera- there was a timer and a buzzer and the process involved heat ( hot off the press) this would have used batteres to run a heating coil. It was an interesting throw-back to the classic era and survived as late as the sixties in Bronx Park. Ambrotype was a similar process but used plate glass negatives- forerunner of slides.

In 1880, Photography was in its infancy. You could take photos as a hobby or for fun and there were very few professional photographers. It was impossible to take a photo of a moving subject and in the early days, most photos had to be taken in bright sunlight. Most photos that were taken were either black and white or sepia toned. It was not possible to take a photo of a scene in perfect focus.
