The images in Google Earth (and Google Maps) are updated on a continuous basis. It's hard to say exactly when an area will be updated because some areas may be updated more frequently than others (just because that data is more readily available). While most images are no more than 3 years old in high resolution areas, low resolution imagery in some areas may be older. When high-res or newer imagery is not available, the base map used in Google Earth is a circa 2000 TerraMetrics/NASA 15 meter resolution base imagery.

It takes months of post processing new imagery before they go online so bulk updates usually happen about every 2-3 weeks. Google Earth and Google Maps share the same backend satellite image database and are updated together.

Why are newer images sometimes found in Historical Imagery?

Newer imagery is sometimes available in 'Historical Imagery', which can be enabled from the View menu option in Google Earth. Sometimes older images are actually of better quality than new images (i.e. there might be a huge cloud over a certain area which encourages using the older, clearer image). This feature is not available in Google Maps.

Where was Google Earth imagery last updated?

Google Maps uses the same satellite data as Google Earth and updated together with bulk updates usually once or twice every month but NOT every area is updated on each update.

It's hard to say exactly when a given area will be updated because Google does not provide advance notice and some areas may be updated more frequently than others (just because that data is more readily available). While most images are no more than 3 years old, you may occasionally see an older image. Urban centers and large cities tend to get updated more frequently than scarcely populated areas largely due to the fact that revenue of ads for businesses in those areas which ultimately pays for the service.

Google announces which areas where updated on several blogs. Google also provides a KML file (see below) for Google Earth showing which regions were updated in each update.

Due to overwhelming demand when a given area will be updated Google has created a new e-mail notification service. Check out 'Follow Your World' in related links below.

Street view photos are updated on a continuous basis, but there is a trade-off between adding new cities and keeping the existing street view imagery current. More new cities are added every month in addition to existing imagery being updated, but it may be several years until a given city is updated.

See related links for more details including a list of cities by country where Google's fleet of Street View cars are currently driving.

The images in Google Maps (and Google Earth) are updated on a continuous basis. The update cycle is typically twice a month, but only a handful of areas are updated at a given time. Updates are made when new imagery is available from a variety of sources.

Not as often as everyone would like.

New photos are added on ongoing basis but goal is to include more and more cities than keep any given city's photos current. More cities and countries are added every couple of months.

In June 2011 Google made the largest update to Street View imagery to-date which updated/added to 13 countries that already had some degree of Street View imagery, including Denmark, Ireland, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Romania, South Africa, Taiwan, Japan, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

For details of recent updates and additions see related links below.

Satellite and aerial imagery

Satellite and aerial imagery are being collected and processed continuously but it takes months of post processing before new imagery is available online in Google Earth and Google Maps, which is main reason why you usually do not find any imagery younger than about 6 months from Google and why bulk updates only happen about once every 2-3 weeks..

A lot of the imagery comes from aerial photographers mostly in airplanes with special high resolution cameras. Some of the imagery even comes from kites and balloons. Google acquires imagery from a variety of providers.

Newer imagery is sometimes available in 'Historical Imagery', which can be enabled from the View menu. So for example, the "default" imagery in a given area could be from 2008 while 2010 imagery is available under 'Historical Imagery'. Google tries to make available the "best" imagery, which may not be the latest.

Street View Imagery

Street view photos are updated on ongoing basis but plan is to include more and more cities than keep any given city's photos current. More cities are added every day.

It looks like most of the Sitemaps updating is supposed to be done by the user him/herself. They recommend every two days. I think they may do it themselves once every 30 days.

Why did street view disappear with Google Earth 6?

Here is one of Google's announcements of ending Street View support for Google Earth versions 5.x and older. "With the most recent update to Google Earth (6.2), we are also finalizing our transition to a new method of delivering Street View imagery in Google Earth. This means, that the older versions of Google Earth (anything before 6.0) will no longer be able to access Street View. We held off making this change until now, when the vast majority of Google Earth users are on 6.0 (or later)." -- Google Jan 2012. Basically, Google decided to improve the Street View interfaces which would be implemented in the current versions of Google Earth for desktop and mobile platforms rather than keep supporting the older (less efficient) method of accessing Street View.
