How big is the house?
What kind of surface is to be painted?
When was the last time it was painted?
How many coats of paint does it need?
What kind of prep work does it require?
Will the colors stay the same or change?
Are there underhangs and tall peaks?
Does it need to be power-washed?

Can't answer with knowing these factors.

Generally, a typical exterior ranges from 1,500 (very small home with minimal prep work) al the up to 15,000 (for large old homes that require lots of restoration work, etc).

The most important aspects of painting are preparation and paint quality. If prepared properly and using high quality paint, an exterior paint job should last 6-8 years. Give or take a few years depending on climate.

A:Exterior paints last the longest with the right surface preparation and choice of exterior paint. You should choose the correct paint depending on the surface as well as other external features, such as climate, air, temperature, etc. The 100% Acrylic Latex Exterior from California Paints has been rated the best for 2010.

Thorough cleaning, followed by primer and two coats of paint will provide the longest lasting exterior finish.

AnswerThis depends on a few things. If the paint is currently in good condition you may only need one coat. However if there is a lot of peeling, alligatoring, chipping etc… you will most likely need to use at least 2 coats. Make sure you use a good quality exterior paint, otherwise it may not hold up to the elements very well.

If the container is well sealed, you can keep paint forever. If it is not that well sealed, the solvents will gradually escape. Even then, you can sometimes add more solvents (in the form of paint thinner) and bring your old paint back to life - unless it has fully solidified in which case it is beyond saving.

You should probably paint it every 5-8 years to be sure your house doesnt look bad. I personally would paint my house when it needed it only. Your judgement is really the only one that matters, so if you think it needs painted; paint it.

As soon as you notice deterioration in the paint that's on it. -It obviously depends a LOT on what material the exterior is - and you haven't said.

Normally homes should be painted no less often than once every five years, sometimes once every seven.
