At this time, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics doesn't report statistics for tattoo artists so the number of licensed artists is not known. However, there are 21,000 tattoo parlors in the US, and Americans spend about $1.65 billions dollars a year on tattoos.
You can certainly tattoo as a hobby. However, the laws vary from state to state in the US. Some require you to be licensed in order to tattoo on someone else, even if there is no charge. Check your state laws.
Dear Lord...sometimes a tattoo is just a tattoo. If it's cool and you have researched the artist get it. It doesn't have to "symbolize" anything. Miami and LA Ink have ruined getting tattoos for those us us who just think a cool tat is a cool tat.
There are several US based tattoo shops where one can get a star tattoo. One can get star tattoos from the All or Nothing shop located in Georgia. One can also get star tattoos from Alternative Arts tattoo shop in North Carolina.
Tattoo schools are complete garbage and a waste of both time and money. Not to mention that to have a "diploma" from one will get you laughed out of any shop if you go in there for a job. You will have to get an apprenticeship with a tattoo artist, which I know is far easier said than done, but this is the only way that you will be able to learn the right way as well as to have respect from other artists who will know that you didn't try to go the easy way out and go to a "school" that attempts to poorly teach you in 2 weeks what it took most of us anywhere from 2-3 years to learn properly. Besides which, there are VERY few of these "schools" in the country, and I don't believe Pennsylvania is one of the states where there is one.
Artists choose their subjects for various reasons, which are seldom known to us.
by law you have to be licensed to be a tattoo artist anywhere in the US including buffalo NY
We don't use "kits", we order what works for us piece by piece from what we learned in our apprenticeships.

The US does not have "licensed abortionist". It does have licensed physicians who perform legal abortions.
86,000+ including the licensed and non-licensed
(in the US) It is highly doubtful, in order to become licensed by any government agency or organization you must be at least of legal age.
One too many
Look into the benefits of the tattoo school you are interested and ask if the course leads to professional licensure for your area. What's included and how nice is the instructor's portfolio? For example in Virginia you can get licensed by taking the 750 hour class at tattoo school at www.tattoo-training.net. There are many tattoo schools out there, one of the highest recommended schools is the International school of Body art, they have locations in the US and Canada. the as well have 1 year online study programs as well as tattoo and piercing in person training. you can get more info here: www.internationalschoolofbodyart.com
Absolutley, but should you? Absolutley not! As with any industry you should know it and live it. If all your staff were to leave you, could you support your business. Also us real artists are insulted by people who cash in on our industry without putting in the disclipline to become an artist first, not a tattoo artist, but an artist.
Do you really believe someone's counting?
As per 2012, there are 2909357 licensed registered nurses in the USA.
