How long do pencils last?

A wooden pencil (or graphite pencil) lasts for as long as you need it to. The purpose really is important relating the lifespan of said pencil; if you were to draw plenty of dark areas or you just need to press harder for specific areas, the pencil will not last as long as one used for drawing a lighter image or sketching.

A pencil's lifespan also depends on the length of said pencil. Understandably, one brand can vary from another, so if you buy a longer length pencil, it should obviously last you a little longer.

The average pencil, dependent on frequent or daily use, should last approximately between a couple of weeks or about two months in retaliation to how frequent you use it.

I would think that it would depend on a lot of factors.

• the kind of paper that is being used. Paper with more "tooth" will take more of the lead.

• how hard you're pressing

• the grade, or softness of the lead.

Here are the grades of drawing pencils...

9B, 8B, 7B, 6B, 5B, 4B, 3B, 2B, B, HB, F, H, 2H, 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H, 7H, 8H, 9H

"B" lead is the softest, while "H" is the hardest. "HB" is what you will find in a common #2 pencil.

So you see that determining how long a pencil will last is not something that can be answered with any certainty, tho it would be interesting to do a study to find out.
