There was a common problem with the Escape liftgate lock/unlock actuator. They just didnt last and unfortunately ford didnt design any other method for unlocking it. So you have to climb in the back and carefully pull the plastic cover away from the gate at the top. The bottom is secured with 4 screws. Reach in and unlock it just to get the door open. Then You have to replace the actuator. Ford sell it for about $180, found it on eBay for $60. Item #220575120836.
