I have a 85 FXWG, Dont know if the set up is the same but it should be close. There are two ways you can go about #1) Remove outer primary and the mounting bolts to the Solinoid then remove the starter, in where the starter bolted to the inner primary casing, there will be a gear that meshes with the gear on the end of the starter shaft. ( when the solinoid is pulled in) It is held in place with 1 or 2 Allen head bolts. (Can't Remember) Remove the Allen bolts and this will allow you to pull out the shaft (from the inside of the primary) that engages your starter to the Clutch. now the Solinoid has a fork that attaches to that shaft and it can be wriggle free as you pull on the shaft and pull out on solinoid at the same time. watch for shims when you pull the outer primary cover and replace them on the stub shaft when you put it back on.
#2) Remove the outer primary cover and with care you can bend one side of the fork that pulls the shaft into the clutch, you will see what I am talking about this will allow you to pull the solinoid with out going thru the hassle of pulling the starter. Then when you put in the new solinoid just bend the fork back up enough that it will not fall out of place. The fork is not real easy to bend it will take some doing. Hope this helps
According to that block number, it should be a 1980-1985 305 V8. So to answer your question; Any starter for a 1980-1985 Malibu, Camaro, Caprice, or Pickup should be the correct one.
about 2 wires with fusible links in them running from divers firewall to passenger side starter behind engine block.
If it's a 1997 or similar age, jack up the front and remove the bar that holds the radiator up, (you'll have to support the radiator by another means) there's 3 bolts to undo, as well as the 2 electrical connections. There should be enough room to squeeze it past the radiator.
Depends on engine size but if you have the common 2.8, easiest thing to do is place a jack under the engine and just get tension on it to relax the passenger side engine mount. Remove the mount bolt. Slightly jack engine up, you dont need a whole lot like maybe an inch at most. with starter removed, flip it upside down, and pull it out the front under the exhaust, but over the control arm. you may have to actually remove the mount plate from the engine if it wont quite clear.
easiest and safest way to spray starter fluid is to spray it straight into air cleaner. you will not need to remove anything to do this and the engine will suk the fluid thru you really need to have the throttle body looked at ,as starter fluid is primarily for use in a diesel, not a gas engine
how do i replace the bendix drive in my 85 harley fxrs
The positive battery cable is attached to the solenoid and the solenoid is attached to the starter itself.
When working on the electrical wiring of anything, it is important to have a diagram for safety reasons. A wiring diagram for a 1985 Ford F-250 Starter Solenoid can be found in its maintenance manual.
with a hammer
Disconnect the - battery cable Raise and support vehicle Remove wiring at top of starter Remove starter mounting bolts Remove starter
first off, what model? i own a1985 wideglide and just replaced starter with an allballs easy to do disconnect cables, lower rear brake cylinder, undo 2 thru bolts being careful not to separate two halves
To change the starter on a 1985 Chevy Celebrity: 1. Disconnect the battery ground. Use gloves to avoid getting battery acid on your skin. 2. Raise the car and put on stands. Be sure the parking brake is on. 3. Remove the wires to the starter solenoid. Take note of their routing . 4. Some starters have a brace at the front of the starter, remove it if present. 5. Using an appropriate socket remove the two bolts that hold the starter in place. There may be shims on the starter, if present save them for re use. The starter should now pull forward and then lower it from the engine. Replacement is the reverse of the above.
Take the positive cable off the battery, then you have to remove the inspection shield on the transmission and then take the two bolts out of the starter
Disconnect the battery. The vehicle will probably have to be raised to reach the starter. The starter has two or three bolts holding it in, and wiring attached. Remove the wires remembering where to put them back. Remove the bolts and pull starter out.
Starters are made specifically for certain engine and transmission combinations. The snout of the starter must be the correct length for the worm gear to engage the ring gear. If you have the wrong starter, the worm gear will not engage properly. If the ring gear is damaged, the starter might be operating properly, but have no teeth to engage. If the solenoid is not working, the starter motor will spin, but the worm gear will not be pushed forward to engage the ring gear. Remove the starter, and visually check the ring gear for missing teeth. If the ring gear appears to be intact, take the starter back to the place where it was purchased and have it tested. If the starter tests good, check the solenoid wiring on the vehicle to insure that the solenoid is being energized. If all of these steps fail to identify the problem, return the starter and get a different starter out of stock and compare them. You might have a mislabeled starter.
Not much info to go on. Is the starter cranking the engine?
As you are standing in front of the car looking down at the engine, starter is on right hand side of engine. Disconnect battery first. Disconnect wires from starter, undo starter bolts, remove starter. Starter and solenoid all come off in one piece, starter will only come off and go back on one way. Tercel starters are a gear reduction type starteer and are pretty reliable, what usually goes wrong with them is the conact points inside the solenoid, which are replaceable. Do you have a automotive electrical rebuild shop in your town? They would have parts. If you are up for the task of taking your starter apart yourself this is a easy fix. I have over 200,000 miles on our 84 tercel with only one starter fix.
