It depends on the size of the hole and whether it can repair on its own. Some people with these disorders don't need surgery but some do. The only way to know is to see a specialist. If one is cynotic (turning blue) or passing out or feeling faint these are not good signs. Wish you the best!

Generally a hole in the heart is congenital - a defect present at birth. The formal name is septal defect, and it can be between the two atria (the top chambers of the heart, called an atrial septal defect) or between the two ventricles (the bottom chambers of the heart, called a ventricular septal defect).

Thankfully, in humans this tends to be developmental issue rather than an inherited genetic issue and can be corrected with open heart surgery on the newborn. The procedure is risky (surgery in babies always is, and open heart surgery doubly so), but once corrected the problem should not arise again. Other methods to close the defect are also possible, including heart catheterization and placement of a surgical device to close the hole.

When lay people speak of a "hole in the heart," they are generally referring to a hole in the wall between the ventricles or between the atria. They are not talking about a hole leaking blood into the chest.
