Loyalists were the people of America who did not oppose the British rule in North America and opposed the freedom struggle of Patriots. They had many reasons to oppose freedom. They were well established and older citizens who did not want to rock the boat. They had an emotional attachment with Britain. They also thought that union with Britain was necessary for economy and defense of America. They feared that once the freedom struggle will be suppressed they will be treated like Scots who were punished by British and their lands were confiscated. They abhorred chaos associated with Patriots's struggle and feared that such a situation will threaten their peaceful and affluent lifestyles.
