Amelia Earhart was the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. She also broke many aviation records, like the woman's speed record of 100km and the woman's altitude record of 1400 feet.
Amelia Eahart was a woman pilot. She was born in 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. She started practicing attempts to break world records in 1922. She set a record of women's altitude, which was 14,000 ft. It was broken a few weeks later by Ruth Nichols. Then, on April 27, 1926, she got a phone call from Captain H.H. Railey. He asked her if she wanted to be the first woman to fly across the Atlantic. She was the both the first woman to fly across the Atlantic (1928) and later the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic (1932).
Amelia made many flights throughout her life. She somehow disappeared over the Pacific Ocean while on a flight around the world in 1937.
Over the years many unconfirmed sightings have been reported...and many theories abound. Among those theories:
She was a noted American aviation pioneer, and author. Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross. awarded for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of The Ninety-Nines, an organization for female pilots. During an attempt to make a circumnavigational flight of the globe in 1937, Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan left New Guinea and disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island. Fascination with her life, career and disappearance continues to this day.
Amelia Earhart was a famous aviator. She achieved notoriety for being a member of a three man crew on a transaltlantic flight in 1928, although she was not the pilot, and genuine fame for being the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic, which she did in 1932. After a number of long-distance flights she attempted an around the world flight in 1937, in the course of which she, her airplane, and her navigator Fred Noonan completely disappeared.
Earhart was a publicity seeker, and used her notoriety to endorse commercial projects, her favourite causes (including women's rights), herself and her career. Because she was so heavily hyped, she tends to overshadow other female aviation pioneers such as Harriet Quimby (the first woman to fly the English Channel, in 1912).
Amelia was the first woman (American) to fly alone across the Atlantic Ocean on May 20th and 21st 1932.
During her attempt to circumnavigate the world in 1937 she disappeared somewhere over the Pacific Ocean and was never seen again although there is a certain amount of controversy surrounding this.
