If you are asking this type of a question, then I have to recomend that you don't do it yourself. Take it to Wal-Mart, or where ever, and let them change it. Firstly, You have to get under the car to change the oil. Secondly, changing the oil in any car almost always makes a mess, missing the catch pan, or dropping the drain plug in the catch pan, or whatever.
The reason I said the above is that 6000's came with 2 engines. Althou one is fairly simple to change the oil on, the other is a complete pain.
The simple 3.1/2.8 have a drain plug on the bottom of the oil pan, which you simply unscrew (I believe its a 15mm wrench to get it off), MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A CATCH PAN IN PLACE!!!, and then you take the oil filter off the front of the motor, CATCH PAN AT THE READY AGAIN!!. Put the new oil filter on hand tight (as tight as you can by hand), and put the oil drain plug back in. Put oil in the engine, 4.5 quarts of 10w30 or 5w30 oil, clean up your mess, start it up, and you are pretty much done.
However, the 2.5 engine can be a real pain. There are 2 different types of the 2.5. And in either case, don't even bother doing it yourself. There is a special tool needed to take the oil filter off. And these engine can make more of a mess then any other engine out there.
In either case, once you change the oil, you still are not done. On a 90 6000 LE, and most other 6000's, there are 4 grease fitting on the front chasis that must be lubricated, there are 10 on the AWD model (I own one). Failure to lubricate these can lead to ball joint failure, or tie rod failure. Both fairly expensive to fix at a shop.
If your car is running out of oil, I would be extremly worried because if you car does not contain any oil then your engine would seize. If you are changing your oil, you need a new oil filter and you rub some new oil on the seal of the new filter so it does not melt to your car. Make sure your bolt that hold your oil in your oil sump is still there. Change your oil after 6000 kilometers. If your oil is still fairly clear your good.
Many lube shops are now using 5 W30. 10 W30 still works well too. Just ask the folks at your oil change shop what they recommend.
Yes.
The oil change light in your car is there to remind you to change your oil in a timely manner. if you do not reset your oil change light, it just wont remind you to change your oil. :)
Could be a bad head gasket.
The oil filter on a 1990 Pontiac 6000 is located on the driver's side of the engine compartment. It is on the side of the motor all the way to the rear, near the firewall.
It is next to the oil filter.
On the oil pan there is a cap you unscrew, and inside there is a "card board filter", that you would pull out and replace.
HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE OIL??????? IS THAT THE QUESTION, HOW DO YOU CHANGE THE OIL????? What is this, a joke?????
5 qts. with a new oil filter change.
i have a 99 gtp and it resets itself after i change the oil
A 1990 Jeep Wrangler needs approximately 6 quarts of oil for an oil change.
There isn't one. You have a DIS system (distributorless ignition system). The modules, and control pack can be seen on the front bottom area of the motor, right next to the oil filter.
Remove oil pan
You will have to drop the oil pan to access
every 6000 kms
I don't, but change the oil and filter every 3000 miles religiously and you will be saved.
