Though both are related in category, they actually have distinctive objectives. Urban planning focuses on shaping a city setting through effective land and ecosystem development and design. However, regional planning focuses on development of larger areas, such as counties, groups of rural districts or multi-state projects.

How to Prepare for an Urban Planning Job?

An urban planner is responsible for developing a city's land and the surrounding resources. They may work in homes, entertainment or recreational centers, or businesses. While these positions result in rewarding careers for creative individuals, the right educational preparations must be taken in order to secure a job in this field. These five steps can help prepare you for an urban planning job: 1. Plan for achieving at least a master's degree in urban planning or a related field. Related fields could include regional planning, urban design or geography. While you may be able to secure an undergraduate degree in urban planning, the chances of obtaining a job are greatly decreased unless you pursue a master's degree. 2. Make sure your graduate program is accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board. When you are looking for entry level jobs in the urban planning field, your potential employers will use this as a check to make sure you have been trained by experienced professionals. 3. Study architecture as part of your undergraduate career. As a planner, you will be in charge of redesigning the slum section of cities and upgrading schools and parks. Having a good grasp on the way architecture works and the way that architects function will allow you to excel at this part of your job. 4. Make room for engineering as part of your education. In your carer as a planner, you'll be responsible for making old transportation new and exciting. You'll also have to come up with ways to expand cities. At the very least, you'll be working hand in hand with civil engineers and a decent undergrad background will allow you to communicate more freely with them. 5. Don't overlook the communication courses. While courses such as math and law are important, the ability to communicate, both through written language and orally, are vital to a successful urban planning job. Essentially, you want to plan a well-rounded educational curriculum. An urban planner's job requires working alongside the public and government officials, and the ideal educational path will be diverse enough to prepare you to work in that environment.
