No, unless you want to live life worrying what your next brief will entail and wondering about the justification behind your work

To make a good living and get hired from the top companies you must be the "best of the best". Being at the right place at the right time and good connections will get you better jobs. You must have a lot of talent, skill and problem solving experience. If you become one of the hot top designers and develop a good reputation, you can expect a lot of work for many years, but as you and your career enter middle age, companies/clients will prefer to hire cheaper younger talent due to lower wages and less benefits.

This career can be very stressful due to deadlines (long hours at times), picky clients, disloyal clients, fierce competition, keeping up with the latest trends/software along with layoffs due to recessions, broken promises from clueless employers and co-workers.

Yes, especially in areas such as NYC.

AnswerThat all depends on the skills of the graphic designer and whether he/she can produce work that makes people want to pay top dollar.

Please... Can we stop pumping posies up young people's skirts. The graphic design industry is one of the worst career choices you could ever make. I've been in the design field for 35 years. I've owned an agency in NY. Of course they pay well in NYC vs. Toledo? A one room flop house rental in NY is 1600 a month. You can get the same bedbugs in Toledo for 250 a month. That's 20 grand for rent vs. 3 grand, so just to pay your rent, you have to earn 17,000 dollars more in NYC. I'm not even going to touch on things like parking (you wouldn't believe me anyway), car insurance rates, the cost of a movie, lunch, etc. If anyone ever tells you that you will be paid well in a major city, read that as, "no, you will not be paid well anywhere." Additionally, it is no longer a viable market. All design is moving to the Web. We old print gurus are road kill waiting to happen and we know it but will never admit it. The new Web 2.0 era is all about programming. Java., PHP, ASP.net, HTML version adnausium. If your asking if programmers who like to pretend they are User Interface Designers get paid well the answer is yes (for now). But they will learn, like everyone else who dares to choose a career based on the supposed prestige of being a designer, that the design industry, be it UID or whatever, is fickle, transient and based on tomorrows technogy. Read some graphic design want ads on any job post. Must know package design, display design, publications design, Photography, must be detail oriented and proficient in the following programming languages... It's enough to make me run screaming from the room. Graphic design has nothing to do with programming or software. The field has become so broad that it is no longer affordable by most companies. So they try to hire one person to handle everything from social media to external signage design and multimedia. And don't even get me started on the poor buggers that are Web designers. If you like getting fired every year and a half, or changing jobs constantly because your company failed or feeling like you will never graduate college because you have to constantly learn a new or updated programming language, then Web design is for you. I have designed websites for fortune 500 companies, business cards for hair dressers, Corportae identity packages for the lords of industry, and won a fair share of awards doing it. I currently make 40,000 a year and I'm glad to get it. I'm thinking about becoming a plumber. Look it up! No joke-it's the better choice, or a teacher! My wife has less years teaching than I have in Design and she makes 72,000 a year. Don't throw your life away. Read up on what jobs are in demand and do that. Keep in mind that jobs like plumbers, doctors, dentists, morticians, pay well because people will always need those services and Plumbing be it copper or human tissue, hasn't evolved much in 20,000 years. Technology is always a poor choice when it comes to a career.

Aptitude of a graphic designer?

It's very rare as a graphic designer to have any potential for advancement. I'm not trying to bum you out or turn you off from this field. I love this field. But if you're not working for someone like a magazine company that puts out seven or eight titles, a big daily newspaper or a large advertising agency, you're going to be the only graphic designer in the company. Hence, there's no potential for advancement because there's nowhere for you to advance to. If you're working for a big agency or a magazine company you could get promoted to art director or creative director, and a newspaper will have a design supervisor. In most cases, though, you're all there is. The other way to look at this is, you start out at the top in graphic design. You can climb up the ladder and become Art Director or Design Director, but often Graphic Designers start their own businesses as a move up.
