Paintings are usually two-dimensional, whereas sculpture is usually three-dimensional. Artists have often utilized a wide array of color in their paintings, whereas sculptors from the past tend to have used more monochromatic colors in their sculptures. Now paintings can be three-dimensional and sculpture can be two-dimensional with a few thick coats of paint. Sculptures can be in very bright, vivid colors now, whereas paintings can now be much more colorless than they were in the past.Paintings and sculpture are similar outlets for artists to express their feelings. Sometimes they can even be from the same media. Nowadays, paintings are more avante-garde than before and sculptures tend to be displayed for shock value more than for the sake of art. Sculptures need not be made out of any one type of material anymore (like marble, or metal). Sometimes sculptures are now made out of found materials or even mixed media.
