The most important aspect of the period of Romanticism was an emphasis on feelings. Some art reflected this mysticism that completely abandoned classic art form. Originality was an absolute requirement of this style of art. A belief and love of nature was another key component. There was a distrust of the human world and the world of nature was trusted and considered more pure. Landscapes that evolved into wilder Gothic themes of nature were popular Romantic themes.
Characteristics of romanticism include being dominated by plot, exaggeration, and idealization. Characteristics of realism include objectivity, and showing life how it truly is rather than idealizing situations.
Some characteristics of Romantic literature (not necessarily of the authors personally) include the following:
- It places emotion (feeling) and intuition above reason.
- It often focuses on nature as a force in its own right (not as some 'pretty backdrop').
- In Germany and France some Romantic literature looked back longingly to the past - often to the Middle Ages as an inegalitarian and Catholic golden age.
- It is often intensely individualistic. (The hero and the 'genius' behave just as they wish, and taboo behaviour may be glorified, too).
- The supernatural, the uncanny and the horrific are 'allowed' and often glorified.
- In writing, the role of originality (creativity) is central. (Earlier literature had often been regarded as a craft, as the recasting of existing, well known topics and stories, but now everything had to be new, inventive, creative, original. This could lead to the creation of grotesque, 'Gothic' literature).
Obviously, none of the writers display all these characteritics in their work. On a personal level many of the early Romantic writers led 'wild and woolly' lives and died very young ...
