i have a 87 Dodge Dakota v-6 pick upat the bottom of the bell housing there are 2 bolts one on each side that hook to a bracket.that hooks to the moter.remove both bottom bolts,you will be able to move and bend the bracket on the starter side out of the way,also will be able to pull the sheet metal gauard from the lower half of the bell housing out.take the top and bottom bolts out of the starter you will need to twist and turn the starter to get it out.but its not all that bad.that is the way i did mine hope this was some help to you Dave
Make sure battery is charged. Clean all wire connection at battery & at the starter. Make sure trans is in neutral or park completely or clutch pedal is completely depressed (check if neutral switch is ok) If no response from these check out solenoid, starter 7 innition switch & all wires/connectors in starting circuit. Here is another thing to look for-make sure the ground strap is connected to block & frame/body. Check the fuse & relay. They are located in the fuses box on the fender well in the engine compartment

the starter is on the passenger side of the engine compartment under the vehicle is the way to access it . First remove neg battery cable . then go to the starter itself and remove the pos bat cable and starter solenoid wire inspect the back of starter to see if a support bracket is installed remove the bracket as necessary. next remove the two 9/16 head bolts and dropthe starter . also there may be a stiffiner stut in the way that may have to be removed as well
