Vincent Van Gogh used lines and colors by the feelings he felt inside, and not necessarily how they would appear in a photograph. For example, in Starry Starry Night his brushstrokes are heavy and create a rhythmic pattern around the stars. This movement was not literally happening, but was the emotion the stars inspired in him.

CONSTELLATION
I think you need to better define what you mean by "configuration". If you mean a pattern of stars with which you can play connect-the-dots to form a picture in the sky, that configuration is called a constellation. If by configuration you mean a close grouping of stars, it would be called a cluster if the total number of stars was in the hundreds of thousands to millions, or even a galaxy of the total number of stars was in the hundres of millions to billions.
A pattern of stars in the night sky is commonly referred to as a constellation. Constellations are imaginary shapes outlined by stars visible from Earth and have been used for navigation and storytelling throughout human history. Some well-known constellations include Orion, Ursa Major, and the Southern Cross.
They're called constellations.
I believe the word you are looking for is "asterism."
