Neanderthals are a group of hominids that broke off from Homo Erectus some 600,000-350,000 years ago. They are not directly related to humans, but there may have been some interbreeding. They traveled out of Africa into Europe and Arabia. It is likely they were black early on but became white due to climatic changed. During the Ice age they adapted to their frigid environment by using furs and tools to survive. However these tools never changed for their whole existence. New tools only came into Neanderthal use when they made contact with humans. Roughly 50,000 years ago the most recent evolution of humans left Africa and traveled the world, out-competing or killing every other human and hominid species. A group of humans made contact with Neanderthals very early on due to their presence in Turkey and the western middle east. Eventually Humans began stealing their caves and killing them, raping them, and out competing them. It is somewhat believed to be the earliest genocide by man. The Neanderthals that survived went further westward into Spain until there was no where left for them to go, and the last of them either died off from starvation or were killed by humans some 25,000 to 35,000 years ago. Current data holds that some 1%-4% of Caucasian DNA is from Neanderthals, indicating that the rare inter-species hybrid was born fertile and lived on. This means that there is some piece of Neanderthals that lived on after their extinction.

Neanderthals were never directly related to man. We both had the same parent species of Homo Erectus. Where as Neanderthals developed a large brain, brute force, and hunter skills, humans developed a slightly smaller large brain, intelligence, and the ability to innovate and imagination. This gave us the cunning edge. It is why Neanderthals are no longer around.

Some speculate if the Ice age never occurred, they would still be around.

Neanderthals were a distinct human species that lived in Europe, parts of Asia, and the Middle East from around 400,000 to 40,000 years ago. They evolved from a common ancestor shared with modern humans before diverging into a separate lineage. The exact origins of Neanderthals are still a subject of ongoing research and debate among scientists.
