∙ 13y agoApproximately 20,000 animals are euthanized in Louisiana shelters each year. The state has made efforts to decrease this number through implementing spay/neuter programs, promoting adoption, and increasing awareness about responsible pet ownership.

There are an estimated 3 to 4 million cats and dogs that are euthanized in the UK each year. Sadly, many of these animals are healthy, but unwanted.

too many. :(
It is estimated that there are between 1.5 to 2 million dogs euthanized every year. This would translate to 0.06 dogs euthanized each second.
According to the Humane Society of the United States approximately four to five million animals (cats and dogs) are euthanized each year. It is estimated that 61% of dogs and 75% of cats that enter a shelter are euthanized. On a related note, USA Today predicts that the US spends about two billion dollars each year to impound, shelter, euthanize, and dispose of homeless animals.
On average, around 1.5 million shelter animals are euthanized every year in the United States, with about 670,000 dogs and 860,000 cats being euthanized. This breaks down to approximately 4,500 dogs and cats euthanized each day.
It is estimated that millions of animals are euthanized in shelters each year, with the exact number varying depending on factors such as location and shelter policies. Efforts are being made to reduce euthanasia rates through increased adoption, spaying/neutering, and education.
The primary consideration is health of the animal - an animal with severe injuries or disease is more likely to be euthanized for humane reasons. Probably the second most used factor is age - younger animals are more adoptable, so older animals tend to be euthanized faster. Other factors include the reason the animal was given to the shelter - fighting animals, aggressive animals and behavior problem animals are more likely to be euthanized because they aren't safe to adopt out, while animals that were given up because the owner couldn't take the pet with him/her to a new house are much easier to get adopted out. There may also be local ordinances that require certain breeds (usually pit bulls, German shepherds, Doberman pinchers, etc.) to be euthanized rather than adopted, or the facility may have a policy of euthanizing after so many days in the shelter.
