Milton S. Hershey, founder of the Hershey Chocolate Company, and his wife Catherine, founded the Milton Hershey School in 1909. They had no children of their own and wanted to help orphan boys in need get a good education. Today, the school, located on more than 10,000 acres in Hershey, serves boys and girls from 4 years of age through their 12th grade graduation, who are in social and financial need. The school provides everything for the children - a top-notch education, recreation, food, housing, clothing, medical and dental care. The children live with a married houseparent couple in homes with about 10 to 12 students their age. More than just caretakers, houseparents take an active, nurturing interest in students' development and well-being. The School emphasizes rigorous academics, character education and hands-on work experience. Senior high school students get training in career/technical areas. Each graduating student also can earn a continuing education scholarship to pursue college or career training. Just as importantly, the school provides caring structure and guidance to help children learn responsibility and keep them safe. Students also have many co-curricular opportunities, from sports to visual and performing arts, to agricultural interests. Milton Hershey School's mission is to nurture and educate children in social and financial need to lead fulfilling and productive lives.
