Opposable thumbs allow us to grasp and manipulate tools in a much easier fashion(as opposed to having to use our mouths, tails or more primitive grasping appendage), and gives us the ability to build and use them in very intricate/complex ways. This, coupled with a larger then average brain, allows us to drastically manipulate our environment in order to make survival much easier.
