The American bittern will stand still in water and wait for its prey. It eats small fish, salamanders, crayfish, insects, frogs, eels, small snakes, and small mammals.

A bittern is a wading bird in the heron family. Unlike the similar stork, ibises and spoonbils, herons and bitterns fly with their necks retracted, not outstretched.
