The REAL answer is that one of the main characters in the story, the younger brother Colin, was an aspiring artist. He would use old box covers to draw on.

Quote from story:

"I thought of the new dress Mom had brought home a few days before in a heavy cardboard box. The box cover would be fine for Colin to draw on."

And another:

"Every now and then Colin got out his framed box cover and looked at it, but he never drew anything on it; he never even picked up his pencil."

This was his last (box) cover that he drew a picture on before leaving his childhood behind. By the way, his pet fox was killed by a hunter.
