Yes it does. Living within a group severely reduces an individual's chances of being eaten by predators. Herd animals usually keep their young towards the centre of the group (as they're the most important) and surround them with the healthiest adults. Weaker animals are pushed towards the edge as they're 'expendable', and likely to be the first target of a predator !
