When Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortés arrived, the Aztecs believed he was Quetzalcoatl, a god who would bring peace to Mexico (some hope!). "Quetzalcoatl" meant feathered snake.

Quetzalcoatl
Quetzalcoatl is a deity in Mesoamerican culture, particularly in Aztec and Toltec mythology. Often depicted as a feathered serpent, Quetzalcoatl is associated with creation, learning, and culture. Worship of Quetzalcoatl played a significant role in pre-Columbian societies in present-day Mexico.
Montezuma thought that Cortes was Quetzalcoatl because Quetzalcoatl was white and so Cortes is white.
some of the name of the ancient Aztec was ometecuhtli, quetzalcoatl, huitzilopochctli(sun god), xipe totec, tlalos (rain god).
Quetzalcoatl is best known as a primary god of the Aztecs, who's civilization lasted from around 1250 until the Spanish invasion in 1519, although it was not immediately destroyed. However, the concept of a Feathered Serpent god existed for almost 2000 years, from the time of the Olmecs(1100BC.) It took on quetzal feathers later, around 150BC. The major worship of this god as Quetzalcoatl began in 700 and lasted until the Spanish Invasion.
