yes considering that they gave up lots of their gold to get back their king from Spanish captors only to have their "god" killed by the Spanish.
Spanish conquistadors commanded by Hernando Cortez arrived in the same year that the Aztecs believed their god Quetzalcoatl would return. At first the Aztecs believed that Cortez was Quetzalcoatl, but Quetzalcoatl was a bloodthirsty god who demanded human sacrifice, and the Spanish were disgusted by this practice. Cortez' army was small but much better equipped, and they found thousands of allies in subject tribes which the Aztecs had conquered and were using to feed Quetzalcoatl. The Aztec king, Montezuma, was killed by his own people when he tried to prevent war with the Spanish, and and the Aztecs were defeated eventually. The Spanish also brought missionaries to Mexico, and the religion of the Aztecs was quickly replaced by Roman Catholicism.

In 1519, Cortes met Moctezuma. The King gave lavish gifts of gold to the Spanish, but unfortunately this simply excited their desire to plunder. Cortes allegedly first kidnapped the Aztec King, then forced him to serve as a puppet while Cortes ruled the Aztecs. In 1520 Moctezuma was killed. Though the reason is disputed, locals claimed this was due to Moctezuma's inability to placate the locals.
Emperor Montezuma (the last Aztec emperor until the Spanish arrival in the XVI century; killed by Hernan Cortes)Emperor Maximiliano (puppet king of France on the XIX century; killed by firing squad under the orders of Benito Juarez)
Both the Aztec and Inca Empires fell from within. You may read in your text book that the Spanish Army attacking Mexico City had a few hundred men. In that case it does not mention the Indian tribes that had been chafing under Aztec rule. It does not mention the thousands of those warriors that joined the Spanish. Then Montezuma, the Aztec leader, promised the Aztec Gods would join the fight in 10 days. After 11 days the gods did not arrive. His own people killed him and the Spanish took over. With the Inca Empire, the Spanish arrived during a civil war. Pizarro, the Spanish Conquistador, made the losing general an offer he could not refuse. I will fight on your side and make you king, but you will work under me. So Pizarro appointed him King over the Incas. When he died, the Spanish made his son King. When he died, the Spanish did not appoint another king.
Cortez conquered the Aztecs by deceit and subterfuge. He kidnapped their king and demanded that they surrender. When they did, he had him killed anyway.
