Peter the Hermit disappeared during the siege of Jerusalem in 1099. However, according to one particular legend, he reappeared in France in 1100, where he founded the Neufmoustier abbey and died there in 1115. This legend was created by Jacques de Vitry, a bishop from Liege. He wanted to write about inspirational characters of the Meuse area who had been to the crusades and came back, so as to encourage people from this area to engage in the Cathar crusade.
Peter was from the town of Bethsaida in Galilee near the Sea of Tiberias.St. Peter (a.k.a. the Apostle Simon Peter, Petrus, the Rock) was from Bethsaida.
