They were 2 brothers from Rome who sided with the Plebians in the escallating Plebian vs. Patrician conflict. They were sons of Cornelia who was the daughter of Scipio Africanus. Tiberius Gracchus became tribune of Rome in 133 BCE and tried in many ways, some illegally, to help the common and poor people. He eventually passed a bill returning public lands to the state for distribution which was vetoed by another tribune. He illegally passed a bill kicking that tribune from office while illegally running for reelection and then passed his land bill again. This sparked a riot in which he was stripped to his underwear, beaten to death with a broken stool, decapitated, and thrown in the Tiber. His brother met a similar fate after being elected tribune in 123 BCE.

Gaius Semrponius Gracchus and Tiberius Sempronius Gracchus were two brothers who were plebeian tribunes, the fist in 133 BC, the second in 122 BC

Tiberius introduced a land reform law to give land to poor peasants. He allocated an inheritance from the king of Pergamus (in present day Turkey) to fund his reform. The senate was responsible for the treasury and for overseas affairs was enraged. He tried to drum up popular support for his struggle against the senate's opposition He also introduced new demands such as abolishing the senators' exclusive right to act as jurors.

Gaius gained support from the agrarian poor by reviving the land reform programme and from the urban plebeians s fixing prices on grain for the urban population. He proposed and improvements in citizenship rights for Latins and others outside Rome. The latter decreased popular support of citizens who did not want to share their privileges.

Both Gracchi were populist who stood for the interest of the poor. They were seen as anti-establishment subversives. Both were assassinated.
