Hades made a deal with them and said that if Persephone had eaten anything during her stay, she would have to remain with him forever as his Queen. It turns out that Persephone ate 3 pomegranite seeds while in the Underworld, but she begged Hades to let her go. So, he decided that she would stay with him for 6 months every year, and for the remaining 6 months, she would return to the surface to live with her mother.
