The modern incarnation of vampires is normally considered 15th century Transylvania, in Romania, during the life of Prince Vlad III (1431-1476), also known as Vlad Tepes (the Impaler), whose family name Dracul is applied to the fictional Count Dracula.
Abraham "Bram" Stoker (8 November 1847 - 20 April 1912) was an Irish novelist and short story writer, best known today for his 1897 Horror novel 'Dracula'. Some believed that was where the whole idea of the people that sucked blood and lived in coffins came from.
There is also the story of Hungarian Countess Elizabeth Bathory (Báthory Erzsébet 1560-1614) who is said to have believed she could remain young by bathing in other women's blood. So her husband and four other conspirators invited unsuspecting women to their house, then chopped them up to provide blood for the countess to bathe in. The total number of victims was said to be over 650. Other sources simply ascribe the murders to sadism.
