AnsweConstantine I became Emperor in the "Gallic Prefecture" of Britain, Gaul and the Iberian Peninsula, on the death of his father in 306. In 312 he defeated Maxentius at the Milvian Bridge (at which point he openly embraced Christianity) and thus became sole Emperor in the West. A rival, Licinius, ruled the Eastern half until 324, when Constantine defeated him in civil war. Constantine then ruled the whole empire until his death in 337.

Constantine, although not a Christian, became active in the church when he presided over the first council of Nicea. This was for political purposes and not especially religious ones, as the Christians were engaged in various infighting about doctrines. These disputes among the Christians were sometimes violent and in all cases disrupting to the empire.

Her mother Helena was a Christian, she was very close to her only son Constantine, who had a deep regard and affection for her.

Possible he become a Christian because of her mother, the most important event that came out of this conversion was the stablishment of freedom of religion in the Roman Empire.

The Edict of Milan was a letter signed by emperors Constantine and Licinius, that proclaimed religious toleration in the Roman Empire.

"When I, Constantine Augustus, as well as I, Licinius Augustus, fortunately met near Mediolanurn (Milan), and were considering everything that pertained to the public welfare and security, we thought, among other things which we saw would be for the good of many, those regulations pertaining to the reverence of the Divinity ought certainly to be made first, so that we might grant to the Christians and others full authority to observe that religion which each preferred"

This freedom is the base of the western civilization and the constitution of the United States.

The Roman Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity in 312 CE.

Constantine is generally considered to have been emperor of Rome from 306 to 337 CE, although he did not become sole emperor of Rome until 324 CE.

During the reign of Diocletian and his predecessors, a shared system had evolved, with two senior emperors, or Augusti, and two junior emperors, or Caesars. On the death in 306 of his father, Constantius I, the troops in Britain hailed Constantine as Augustus, with the support of a German king, Crocus or Erocus, who was their ally. The senior Augustus, Galerius, conceded Constantine the rank of Caesar, but made Severus his fellow Augustus. It took many years of intrigue, betrayal and civil war, before Constantine finally became sole emperor of Rome.

Constantine was pope from 708 to 715. Not to be confused with the Roman emperor by the same name.
