The Aztecs built nothing lasting and invented nothing. They did successfully gain control of an empire that had already existed before they arrived in the area of today's Mexico City. But their power and governance was short-lived; within less than 200 years they were violently deposed by a combination of Spanish conquistadores, the illnesses imported to the New World by them and other Europeans and by previously subjugated tribes who were anxious to throw off the yoke of Aztec oppression. Interestingly, the Aztecs themselves never claimed to have built the megalithic structures found in central and northern Mexico, but admitted that they had been built long before the first Aztecs had ever reached the region.
