Alexander the Great was the main influence of Hellenistic civilization. Alexander the Great conquered all of Greece, the Middle East and Asia Minor, in doing so he blended all of their cultures to create Hellenism.
The term "Hellenistic" refers to the period following the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BCE when his vast empire was divided among his generals, known as the Diadochi. The three main kingdoms that emerged from this division were the Seleucid Empire in Asia, the Ptolemaic Kingdom in Egypt, and the Antigonid Kingdom in Macedon and Greece. These kingdoms were called Hellenistic because they adopted and spread Greek culture, language, and customs throughout their territories, blending them with local traditions to create a unique hybrid culture.

In the Classical period, the main artistic concern shifted to the human figure, with an emphasis on idealized proportions and expressions. Finally, in the Hellenistic period, artists focused on capturing emotion in their works, often depicting dramatic scenes and intense feelings in their sculptures and paintings.

The Hellenistic period begins right after the end of the "classical" period. The divding line is the reign of Alexander the Great. The Classical Period is generally considered to be from about 500 B.C. to 323 B.C. and then the Hellensitic period is 323 B.C. to around 140 B.C. when the Romans began to gain more power. There are techonological and cultural differences between the two periods, but the main difference is the amount of territory controlled by the Greek civilization after the reign of Alexander.
