Originally, pharaohs were buried in mastabas. Then, Imhotep (the mummy in The Mummy) stacked one on another, making the step pyramid. After that, pyramids were the place to be buried. When people realized pyramids were getting robbed, the Valley of the Kings, a more secret location, was used, and underground tombs were created.
Pharaoh means, "Great House." In ancient Egypt, the Pharaoh had many roles in his kingdom. He watched over the law courts and was the chief of the temples. He was an army leader and controlled trade expeditions. He supervised the water system and stored the grain. Ancient Egyptians believed that each living pharaoh was a living god. They believed that each pharaoh was the human form of Horus. The pharaohs where very important to Egypt because they pleased their gods so good fortune would come to Egypt. The pharaohs believed that everyone should be treated with justice. The pharaohs were transported from place to place on a chair carried by servants. There were many items which stood for kingship. For example crowns, which were headresses with jewels, stood for "Supreme Rank." False beards, which were worn by kings and queens, symbolized royal authority. The sceptor also meant royal authority and was carried by kings and queens. The pharaohs had a daily schedule. The day went like this: first, the pharaoh would go to the temple to please and pray to their god. Next, the pharaoh would hear his daily news from his trusted vizior. Then, the pharaoh would check the architectures which were built by his servants and officials. Finally, if the pharaoh had extra leisure time, he would be entertained by his servants, or he would have a conversation with his wife.
Since pharaohes had more than one wife, each pharaoh had a 'Great Chief Wife'. That wife's eldest son became the pharaoh. If that wife only had female kids, the eldest daughter became the Pharaoh

The government that the ancient Egyptians had was in its most simplistic form, a monarchy. However, the Pharaoh was seen as a living god on earth. Quite simply, the kingship of the Pharaoh and his authority could not be questioned. That's not to say it didn't happen, but it reinforced a completely different worldview than the one we have today. The Pharaoh was worshipped alongside the gods, and when the Pharaoh died, he would take his rightful place as king of the underworld. This had immense implications, especially when looking at the reign of Akenaten. He attempted to force worship of the Aten (or sun disc) as a new monotheistic national cult. He built a new center of religious activity for the whole of Egypt, and got away with it for most of his reign. This would be akin to a President in the United States suddenly declaring that Mahayana Buddhism was the national religion and nobody doing anything about it until he died. When Akenaten died, his son, Tutankhamun, destroyed the cult of the Aten and restored the old religion. But in today's world, such a drastic and unilateral policy decision would never be tolerated. But that's the way it was with a god-king. :)
After Cleopatra died, Egypt was ruled by Rome. Recently, an inscription has been discovered proclaiming Octavian pharaoh, but Octavian never took that title. It is assumed that the Egyptian priests considered Octavian their new pharaoh in their quest for continuity. After Cleopatra died, Egypt was ruled by Rome.
