King Agsilaus II of Sparta began a successful attack on the Persian Empire In Asia Minor but was recalled to deal with problems at home. Sixty years later King Phillip II of Macedonia planned and organised the assault on the Persian Empire, but was assassinated on the eve of his departure. His son Alexander II (later called The Great) took over the project and succeeded.

After the Persian invasion was turned back Athens formed the Delian League to continue, while Sparta withdrew to deal with its restive serfs at home. Athens progressively exploited and opressed the League and after the Persians agreed to peace, openly turned it into an empire.
By the opening of the 19th century, Great Britain had built a global empire stretching both east and west from its home-islands off the northwest coast of Europe. After its defeat of Napoleonic France in 1815, the British Empire had no equal among other modern nations as it developed its imperial holdings still further.
