I'm thinking that the Peasant class, as it were, were told exactly what they were to believe by those that had a vested interest in having them believe what they, the rulers, wanted the peasants to understand. And if you think I am saying that Churches of various faiths have kept people in ignorance for centuries then you might just be right !
