Hunyuk is a German slang term, originally as a reference to someone who is Hungarian, (also Bohunk). In original context is was derogatory, with a sense that the person referred to, or Hungarians as an ethnic group were slow witted, uncultured, and ill behaved. In its usage, is became adopted into vocabulary as a surname. In the same vein, Hungarians had slang names for Germans.
It is still a used term in much of the north central US (the Dakotas, Wisconsin, Illinois) and can range in meaning from negative to endearing. An equivalent might be "redneck" or hillbilly" on the negative end to "rascal" on he endearing end.
