While at Circes for the first time they all eat and drink, but Elpenor drinks too much and falls asleep on the roof and when he wakes up in the morning he falls off and dies. Odysseus then travels to the underworld and sees Elpenors soul among the others, after asking him how he died Elpenor asks him to go back to Aeaea and to perform funeral rites for him.

Odysseus regales Aeolus with stories of the war at Troy for a month, before leaving. When he returns, Odysseus begs Aeolus for more help, but he is denied.
When you think of how Odysseus reacted when he landed on Calypso's island, Ogygia, I think Odysseus was scared of losing his men. Which had happened, obviously. Also I think he was afraid of not returning home, all through the story he talks of Ithaca and wanting to return.

Circe wasn't a goddess she was a sorceress who lived on the island Aeaea and turned any men who came to her island into pigs until Odysseus stopped her with the help of the god Hermes.
