Well, he has a HUGE impact on people who had a fishing profession. He was supposed to be the guardian of the seas, so sailors and fisherman prayed and worshipped him. He also had an affect on the Romans, who hated to sail across the oceans, so they despised poseidon. So he mostly had an affect on fisherman and sailors, or soldiers going on a voyage. Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea, was in theory responsible for everything connected to the sea, at least if you believe Greek mythology. Greek sailors would pray to him that their ship would not be wrecked or becalmed, or suffer other nautical misfortunes.
Neptune was the god of the sea in Roman mythology (derived from the god Poseidon of Greek mythology) and to my knowledge, he is not worshipped anymore. In earlier times, sailors used to pray to Neptune for safe voyages.
